This year I have been on my gap year, and one of my goals was to get involved with an NGO (Project 90 in particular!) to gain some experience.

When I was approached out of the blue in October and asked if I would like to assist with the planning of the Project 90’s Awesome Race, I jumped at the opportunity.

I was first introduced to Project 90 three years ago when I joined the Rhodes High School Environmental club. Throughout my time in our Eco Club I was motivated by my teachers, my peers and the Project 90 mentors to do my best.

I started as a conservative member and soon climbed the hierarchy within the club and became chairperson.

With the guidance and motivation of my teachers I was able to lead the Rhodes High Project 90 Leadership Club through the various annual projects and to victory whenever a competition arose. Throughout the years I have gained experience and knowledge on how to live a more low-carbon lifestyle and have grown as a leader as I became more confident in my ability to take the lead.

Volunteering at Project 90 gave me the experience of how to work in an office environment and how to communicate effectively with those around me. I have learnt how much effort goes into organizing events like the Awesome Race and how important communication within a team is. One of my key learnings was understanding how I am able to achieve my goals within a set period of time.

The planning for the Awesome Race went really well and it was fulfilling to see how much the participants enjoyed the day.

I am very thankful to Project 90 for the opportunity to be a part of the Awesome Race organising team. It was exciting to work alongside the inspiring mentors and Project 90 staff, to play my part in motivating and inspiring young minds.
