From April 12 to 17, 2025, over 200 climate justice activists from 70 countries gathered in Brasília for the Renew Our Power Gathering. This international event, hosted by 350.org, aimed to discuss, learn, and share insights on the Just Energy Transition, with a focus on empowering communities and advocating for sustainable energy solutions.
The gathering featured various activities and breakouts that enhanced our knowledge on the Just Energy Transition and its financing. This knowledge is crucial ahead of the G20 summit in November 2025, as it facilitates knowledge sharing among diverse communities and cultures, highlighting similarities and fostering shared solidarity.
Storytelling was emphasised as a key tool for highlighting common challenges faced in advocating for energy democracy, helping communities advocate for policies that support decentralised and democratic energy systems.
Two compelling case studies were presented:
- Solar Herity in Detroit, Michigan: After the local power company faced bankruptcy, residents in Highland Park banded together to install solar-powered lamps, improving safety and resilience in their neighborhood. This initiative has expanded to include community solar projects and resilience hubs.
- Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) in Northern California: PG&E has been responsible for devastating wildfires due to negligence. Organizers are advocating for a public takeover of the company to prioritize community needs over corporate profits.
Collective Action for Climate Justice
The discussions highlighted obstacles communities face in advocating for energy democracy, including corporate resistance and lack of awareness. We envisioned a future where energy systems are shaped by diverse community needs, promoting resilience and sustainability.
Climate Finance and Justice
We explored the intersection of climate finance and justice, emphasising collective action to address the climate crisis. Participants shared personal stories, underscoring the importance of youth involvement in environmental activism.
Wealth Redistribution and Barriers
We discussed redistributing wealth from the super-rich to support climate justice initiatives, identifying barriers posed by powerful corporate actors and political systems.
Community Empowerment and Art in Activism
The final day focused on community empowerment through collaboration and the role of art in activism. Dr. Re Ambrose discussed the importance of understanding social and environmental issues, particularly within the Black church community.
Taking Action
During the gathering there were two actions which were held to raise awareness about critical issues:
- #STOPEACOP: Participants joined actions to call for an end to fossil fuel expansion and advocate for climate justice.
- #COP30: Organisers prepared messages to emphasise the need for ambitious climate action and solidarity among nations for the upcoming climate conference. We urged Brazil to lead the Just Energy Transition at #COP30, recognising the country’s crucial role in promoting global climate justice
A Boost of Inspiration
We were honored to receive a visit from Minister of Environment Marina Silva, who encouraged us to keep fighting for climate justice. Her presence and words of encouragement served as a powerful reminder of the importance of our work and the need for continued activism.
Solidarity Among Activists
A striking aspect of the gathering was the solidarity among activists from island nations, embodying the principle of “nothing for us without us.” Despite facing severe climate impacts, these activists demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination.
Engaging with South African Officials
We met with representatives from the South African government, discussing shared aims of supporting South Africa in the multilateral arena and offering support from civil society.
Conclusion
The Renew Our Power Gathering underscored the importance of collective action in addressing climate justice and energy democracy. We left inspired to continue advocacy efforts, armed with new insights, strategies, and connections. Together, as climate justice activists we can create a more sustainable and equitable future.
