National Nuclear Regulator Hearings in June 2024.

NNR hearings started 3 June onwards and for the first time, also included the communities in the Northern Cape. These were fortunately the same communities that Lydia had workshopped in May earlier in the year, so they were confident to attend and speak. The Northern Cape communities have the added burden of all the low and medium waste buried in their unique ecosystem of Namaqualand.

The Athlone venue was the closest one for the Project 90 communities and youth to attend and it was decided that we would have very visible t-shirts, and a banner made to have in the background as the hearings were live streamed. Gabriel Klaasen presented for Project 90 and Lisakhanya Mathiso for the youth. Four community members also presented at this hearing.

The overall feedback from presenters was that there was a NNR board present as well as a number of Technicians, but there was not interaction with the presenter or the public during these hearings and that was disconcerting for many speakers. The NNR board indicated that they were only there to listen.
