A group of civil society organisations has issued a challenge for Government to set itself decisive climate change objectives. The challenge was delivered during a media briefing held in Cape Town on 30 Jan, hosted by Project 90 by 2030
“Climate change poses an immediate and far reaching threat to people and communities worldwide and has adverse implications on basic human rights. South Africa, in particular, is set to experience double the global average in warming which is likely to lead to environmental disasters on an unprecedented scale. A commitment to a Just Energy Transition needs to be more than just a statement of good intent and South Africa needs robust policies and measures that will mitigate the impact we have on our fragile earth and contribute to keeping global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees pre-industrial times,” says Project 90 by 2030’s policy analyst Richard Halsey.
