THE CATHOLIC PARLIAMENTARY LIAISON OFFICE and PROJECT 90 BY 2030 cordially invite you to participate in a Roundtable Discussion on Just Energy Transition: Community ownership and the future of Renewable Energy systems

Ownership in the energy sector continues to be a controversial subject, yet one that must be
addressed if we are to develop a Just Energy Transition (JET) plan. To continue the discussion on this
topic, Project 90 by 2030 has conducted a short study which focuses on community based ownership
that will be presented at the roundtable. From the research, an aspirational goal emerges of a future
energy system primarily based on renewable energy where the majority of ownership is social or
communal in nature. This differs dramatically from the current status quo in South Africa. Some
permutations of energy system transition operate from a hyper-capitalist or pro-market, green
economy basis. While these may deliver some of the required shifts in energy sources, and reductions
in greenhouse gas emissions, they do not contribute adequately to reducing inequality and poverty.

Facilitator: Tasneem Essop (Energy Democracy Initiative)
Speakers: Dr Neil Overy (Independent Researcher – “The Role of Ownership in a
Just Energy Transition”); Ms Karien Erasmus (Climate Change Advisor, Promethium Carbon –
“Community based renewable energy projects on mine impacted land”); Mr Thabo Sibeko (Programme Officer, Earthlife Africa – “Pilot renewable energy projects in communities”)
