Well done to all those who took part in The Project 90 Environmental Day of Service at the Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area  earlier this month. It was a highly successful day. In only three hours we were able to clear a total of 169 square metres of Port Jackson. That’s roughly a third of the size of a tennis court!

Some people may question, why spend time and effort clearing alien plantation? Well, indigenous plantation such as the fynbos, find it difficult to grow amongst alien plantation. Port Jackson grows above the fynbos taking away it’s sunlight, it also needs a lot more water than endemic plants, causing havoc to the surrounding environment.

This is a great read on Water Security and Supply in SA    and this publication, Thirsty Tree plantations, no water left and climate confusion, which gives some good information on alien plants and their effect on the climate.

Well done again and please email Daniel at wcs@90×2030.org.za if you would like to come along to our next event. We have uploaded pictures from the day on our flikr account  and facebook.
