Role overview 

Project 90 by 2030 (https://90by2030.org.za/) is a social and environmental justice organisation inspiring and mobilising South African society towards a sustainably developed and equitable low-carbon future. 

We work with stakeholders and decision makers to identify policies and actions that support climate justice; with a specific focus on developing environmental leadership in our youth, and increasing people’s ability to engage government, through active public participation to address climate change, energy poverty, and the social injustices that intersect in their communities. 

Project 90 by 2030 is looking for a Project Coordinator to lead the Youth Support Hub for the Southern African youth climate movement (YCM). The Youth Support Hub is a youth-led initiative which aims to bring young people in the climate justice movement together and develop their skills through holistic support, by connecting them to each other and to expert coaches who can help them grow. 

The Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring a consistent and coordinated approach between support providers, youth climate leaders, and across all areas of operation in alignment with strategic objectives. This includes management of relationships with collaborators and external parties, execution of vision on time and on budget, support and mentorship to YCAs in the movement. Strong communication, organisational and personal relationship management skills are essential. 

 

Responsibilities & Tasks: 

  1. Leading the roll-out of the Support Hub, and ensuring support addresses localised needs and is designed for a youth audience. 
  2. Overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring efficient planning, communications and delivery of projects/services on time and on budget. 
  3. Supporting team members and partners in their roles; developing strong relationships with the network of support providers. 
  4. Collaboratively developing a curriculum of support, including through the engagement of external experts. 
  5. Leading outreach missions, fostering relationships with youth climate leaders and key actors within the climate space and overseeing the organisation of in-person and online workshops. 
  6. Keeping up-to-date on key developments in the climate space in Southern Africa. 
  7. Maintaining project documentation and contributing to reporting. 

Skills and Experience: 

It is essential that candidates have: 

  • Minimum of 4 years professional experience in an operational capacity 
  • Experience in coordination of coalitions and/or teams 
  • Experience in activism (ideally climate-related) and/or understanding of the challenges faced by activists 
  • Cultural and gender awareness and sensitivity 
  • Ability to travel within Southern Africa and to work flexible hours when needed 
  • Excellent spoken and written English, plus at least one additional language spoken in Southern Africa.  

It is preferred that candidates have: 

  • Experience working with youth 
  • Experience designing and facilitating trainings/workshops  

Terms 
Employment Status: 1-year contract, with potential to extend project 
Location: Cape Town preferred, but not required 
Working time: fulltime – 140 hrs/month 
Start date: Friday, 1 April, 2025 
Remuneration: Approximately R30 000 (negotiable depending on experience)
