Job description: Research assistant to track gas developments in Southern Africa

Project 90 by 2030 is looking to contract a research assistant part-time (2 days a week) for 12 months starting in October 2023.

We are all about supporting young climate activists and would like to give young professionals an opportunity to gain more experience in an office workspace environment and to learn more about issues related to energy and climate change. Many of the young people you meet in the South African climate and energy space have started their career with us, joined our youth leadership programme or have engaged with us in some way.
About the role:
We are in search of a research assistant for our 12-months project that aims to track gas developments in Southern Africa and document the progress of projects and campaigns led by civil society against such developments. The project will also convene meetings so that the network of civil society organisations (CSOs) working against gas can share information, build capacity particularly in young activists and include their perspectives and align campaigns to put pressure on government and industry more effectively to stop the dash for gas.
The successful candidate will support the project manager with the tracking and documenting of gas projects in Southern Africa and give administrative support to the anti-gas network.
Job responsibilities:
- Support the project manager with weekly data collection on gas developments:
- review of shared information by network members such as articles, documents, and other data.
- Review of other information and data of other tracking organisations.
- Support the network withs data research requests.
- Weekly update and maintain the gas tracking data base.
- Develop information cards on each gas project and share on website and with gas tracking group.
- Support the project manager and communication assistant with the convening of network meetings and ad hoc bilateral meetings with members.
You are the right person for the job if …
- You are passionate about the environment, climate change and where our energy is coming from.
- You have tertiary education experience and enjoy working in an office space doing research.
- You know how to use search engines and like reading articles to track and analyze relevant information on gas.
- You are someone with attention to detail, who has experience working with excel and is willing to learn and teach themselves more about data capturing and analyzing working with excel and potentially other web tools.
- You take initiative, are focused on the task at hand and can problem solve and suggest solutions.
- You can work on your own but also in a team and have good communication skills.
