Job description: Communication and digital engagement assistant to communicate gas developments in Southern Africa

Project 90 by 2030 is looking to contract a communication and digital engagement assistant part-time (2 days a week) for 12 months starting in October 2023.

We are all about supporting young climate activists and would like to give young professionals an opportunity to gain more experience in an office workspace and to learn more about issues related to energy and climate change. Many of the young people you meet in the South African climate and energy space have started their career with us, joined our youth leadership programme or have engaged with us in some way.

About the role:

We are in search of a communication assistant for our 12-months project that aims to track gas developments in Southern Africa and document the progress of projects and campaigns led by civil society against such developments. The project will also convene meetings so that the network of civil society organisations (CSOs) working against gas can share information, build capacity particularly in young activists and include their perspectives and align campaigns to put pressure on government and industry more effectively to stop the dash for gas.

The successful candidate will support the project manager with the communication on ongoing gas projects in Southern Africa and give administrative support to the anti-gas network.

Job responsibilities:

  • Support the project manager with weekly data collection on gas developments:
    • review of shared information by network members such as articles, documents, and other data.
    • Review of other information and data of other tracking organisations.
  • Support the project manager with the convening of network meetings by facilitating the discussion and organising expert inputs at the meetings and maintaining communication channels with the network partners.
  • Support the network with communication requests.
  • Support the project through effectively communicating findings, projects, and activities to various stakeholder.
  • Grow the network by identifying other parties especially young activists that are interested in this work and inviting them to join the network.
  • Content development for social media, website, and events
  • Website maintenance and cooperation with other communication officers at Project 90 by 2030

You are the right person for the job if …

  • You are passionate about the environment, climate change and where our energy is coming from.
  • You have tertiary education and experience in communications, happy to work in an office space doing research.
  • You love working with social media and have experiences working with software such as Canva and are willing to learn and teach yourself more about communication and visualization of information.
  • You are someone who likes engaging with a diverse group of people and has an interest in facilitating discussions and organising events.
  • You take initiative, are focused on the task at hand and can problem solve and suggest solutions.
  • You can work on your own but also in a team and have good communication skills.
