The past few weeks will undoubtedly go down as some of the most incredible and memorable weeks in the history of the Project 90 Leadership Clubs.

It saw eight Project 90 Leadership Clubs in the Western Cape embark on a Low-Carbon project collectively (aptly named the Playing with Solar project) to build a solar mobile phone charging station (with the capacity to charge up to six mobile phones at a time) for each of the participating schools – with the help of two engineers from Solarus Sunpower, Stefano Semprini and Robert Bayer.

Over the course of the five-week project, club members also took to the challenge of spreading the message about solar energy at their respective schools. The club members came away from the project with a huge sense of pride having achieved what they set out to do. Amani Waglay from Norman Henshilwood High School said: “…I’ve learnt a lot and enjoyed every minute of the solar charging station building process…”. Kathima Naajjar, teacher at Rhodes High School, said: “Thank you so much for coordinating a meaningful and valuable programme, it was a brilliant idea. The Rhodes Environmental Club enjoyed the Playing with Solar project.”

The Playing with Solar project would not have been possible without the support of the teachers, the Leadership Club mentors, the team from Solarus Sunpower and also the generous sponsorship of the electronic components for the charging stations from Mantech Electronics.

The second term will see the Leadership Clubs plan their Day of Action campaigns – inspiring and rallying their school community towards fun and meaningful low-carbon actions. It looks set to be an exciting few months ahead!
