In an effort to encourage people to save energy while reducing pollution, we are promoting the use of more energy efficient ways of cooking food. The ‘Keep It Bag’ reduces the energy used in the cooking process. It is essentially a fabric container filled with insulating material into which a hot pot of food is placed to cook until ready. The Keep It Bag works as a slow cooker and also as a cooler bag to keep food and beverages cold.

For our first batch of Keep It Bags we decided on using fibre made from used plastic bottles as the insulating material. Our Policy and Research Intern, Neoka Naidoo, tested the Keep It Bag and was thrilled with the results. She said, “I love the fact that my food doesn’t burn and that I can do something else without having to watch my pot while it is cooking.”

Saving energy and effort are not the only benefits of the Keep It Bag. By recycling plastic bottles into fibre that can be used elsewhere, we are making use of materials that would have otherwise end up in landfills. Furthermore, in producing the Keep It Bags, Project 90 wanted to support an income generating project. The Village Workshop is an income generating project of the Cerebral Palsy Association of the Western Cape. Here the workers are given an opportunity to earn an income through carpentry and sewing projects, just to name a few. Project 90 has partnered with them in the production of the Keep It Bag range.

Project 90 has also produced a range of Keep It Bag kits that are pre-cut and partially sewn. All that is needed to complete the Keep It Bag is to fill it with a suitable insulation material of choice and then to sew it closed. The kit contains all the other materials necessary to complete the bag.
